![]() At the faction stronghold provinces the battles become more difficult than a regular skirmish. Here you engage in the kind of battles you expect from run-of-the-mill RTSs. When moving your commander character to the territories you wish to invade, the game switches to the standard battle-map. You start on the over-map showing a continent divided amongst the factions into provinces. The most you get in the way of story is vignettes for faction introductions, those you defeat, and the final endgame. Regardless of whom you pick, your mission is to kill everyone else and conquer the planet. Instead of a straightforward narrative, you must choose between the available factions that are at odds with each other on the planet Kronus. What sets Dark Crusade apart from standard RTSs is how the game approaches the single player campaign. There are the human Space Marines, elf-like Eldar, Orks, and undead Necrons. ![]() The factions you pick are inspired by the same playable armies from 40k along with the units you make for your army. The structures you build and the maps in which you battle are taken from Cities of Death. The only thing separating Dark Crusade from any other in the genre is the brand. Base building, resource gathering, and army building mechanics are easy to understand for veterans. There were a few expansions to the base game and the one I kept coming back to for more was Dark Crusade.įitting the concept of large-scale tabletop battles, Dark Crusade is a real-time strategy game (RTS) that adapts the 40k brand. I was introduced to 40k when I played Dawn of War from the now defunct THQ. Billions die in unending wars for dominance over what is left of dead and dying worlds. 40k imagines a universe in the 401 st Century where humanity has spread across the known galaxy, surrounded on all sides by forces that oppose their existence. The art books, novels, and rulebooks are a treasure-trove of lore that speaks to me as a fan of science fiction. I never learned how to play, but the appeal for me is the ancillary materials. If you go for DOW 1 make sure you grab the camera mod, so it doesn't feel like you are always zoomed in.Warhammer 40k is a tabletop game in which you build an army of miniature figures to do battle in a variety of scenarios. ![]() There are mods for almost everything, Soulstorm has probably over 20 race mod packs, rebalance mods, etc. Dark Crusade is a treat for the veterans with arguably the best vanilla balance, but not so good mod support. I greatly suggest Dawn of War 1: Soulstorm since it's the last expansion and has all races and the greatest mod support. Perhaps you can try it out if you find it for 5 bucks, but don't pay more than that. There are too many reasons to keep it short, just don't go for it. Feels more arcade-ish, and this might be easier to get into as a new player.ĭOW 3 was trash, period. You basically focus on moving around the map, and when your squad is low on HP you let them retreat fast so they can heal and reinforce. There is no morale, the combat system is rock-paper-scissors, and they added suppression where non-vehicles can get slowed down or outright pinned down and unable to move. Requisition points cannot be reinforced, there is no base building, and at most some squads can build turrets or a support structure (mostly heroes) like a reinforcement point, so you are basically moving around the map all the time to stop the enemy from capturing your resources. The game is much simpler, you only need to manage squads, no base building, no tech, at most you research tier 2 and tier 3 to unlock new units and wargear. It's common to play with roughly 6-8 squads. It develops like traditional RTS with tiers, base building, and map tactics.ĭOW 2 was cool, but far from the W40K feel. This game was the coolest idea since you are all about map control, distributed base building, and building massive armies. DOW 1 was the best, but if you are getting into it right now you might feel it's bad due to outdated graphics, need a camera mod to zoom at a normal distance, etc.
