You do have a permanent license, but newer blurays may need updates which are not always given out. In fact if an AACS key of a hardware player is revealed, and it's older than a few years and not something as big as a playstation or xbox, chances are you are out of luck. It's not actually cyberlink killing the software actively, but rather them just not inserting new AACS keys, and I doubt AACS keys of hardware players are revealed that often. I guess the backlash back then knocked them down a bit.
